FINAL GIRL began with an invitation from dancer Rina Marques to clown and director Rui Paixão to direct a dance solo for public space. In horror cinema, the term “final girl” or “survivor girl” refers to the last woman alive — the one who confronts the killer, the one who survives to tell the story. This is the starting point for a performance that seeks to create a clown-like visual and choreographic universe through an intense, incoherent and ironic gesture.
Rina Marques (Santa Maria da Feira) is a freelance dancer and choreographer. She holds degrees from the Escola Superior de Dança (Lisbon, Portugal) and the Conservatori Superior de Dansa de l’Institut del Teatre (Barcelona, Spain). In 2018, she was a student of Companhia Instável’s FAICC programme. Since 2017, she has developed her own work and collaborated with other artists, notably Nova Refutação do Tempo with Sara Ferreira and FINAL GIRL with Rui Paixão. Alongside her creative work, she performs with other artists and companies, including Mathilde Monnier, Joan Jonas, Teatro do Mar, Útero, Purga, Sofia Dias & Vítor Roriz, Joana Providência and Marco Martins. She is the founder of DESCARGA Jams, a project focused on organising jam sessions and bringing together different artistic practices. She is also a teacher at Movement Porto.
Rui Paixão (Santa Maria da Feira, 1995) is a clown of the worst sort. Creator and performer, with a particular interest in public space, he develops work in physical theatre, clown and contemporary circus. He has collaborated twice with Cirque du Soleil as a clown and creator (X, 2019–2020; Drawn to Life, 2023–2024), and works as a performer with Marlene Monteiro Freitas (Lulu, 2023; NÔT, 2025). Between 2015 and 2026, he presented several independent performances and recently founded Holy Clowns, a company that supports his artistic creations and research. He has also distinguished himself as a guest director and artistic director of Circo Coliseu do Porto (2022), and more recently with TROGLODITA, created for Teatro do Bolhão’s company.
