alga, the pseudonym of Cláudia Simões, develops a performative and emotional practice, taking the listener on a sensory and supernatural journey through a deeply personal and evocative soundscape. Between spectral voices, field recordings, improvisation and looping, she creates a soundscape haunted by spirits, patient and contemplative, filled with memories and hazy allusions.
Cláudia Simões (Sintra, 1998) lives and works in Porto. In September 2024, Cláudia Simões presented MATERDOLOROSA, her first mini-album, conceived as a tribute to the women in her family and composed from field recordings and improvisations. The project was reissued this year on vinyl + DVD by Winter Serpent. In January this year, she released Terceiro Solstício, which has since travelled to different places, extending her research into memory, the body and sound matter. As Joana Guerra writes about her work: “(...) We return to the uterine sac and listen to the world from within, cocooned by maternal veils. The body in sound and the sound of bodies, breezes brushing against faces and hands, tides, mist, unstable materials that make the experience of reality uncertain. (...)”
